Europe's most popular communications, PR
and media conversation

This week's chat

July 15, 2014 Transcript of #CommsChat on the 2014 Communication Directors’ Forum

We covered a whole range of topics last night in our @CommsForum special of #CommsChat. Inspired by the conference program we discussed everything from cyber security, to PR measurement and the role of social platforms in internal communications.

  • @KuluValley with video, we’re beginning to see more IT teams look at Cloud deployment than ever before. Before – always their own hardware
  • ‏@dcharold  Increasingly we measure success in social terms. Who comes to the blog, who shares, who is talking
  • @CommsOKeeffe A big problem is that no widely accepted standard for PR measurement exists
  • ‏@AliciaCustis challenge sometimes is showing where comms work has made difference/had impact in isolation of others factors
  • @tweetwheeler  our social collaboration platform has transformed the way we communicate in @XchangingGroup
  • ‏@BenMNoble I see a future in customized social platforms that house all the networks but filter according to what you want.

  17. The high points for me have always been the dinners where you get a chance to talk across broad topics and see what is sparked

  18. Hope to see a return to confidence on board Plus some investment !

  19. I’m shameless. If someone looks like they might know how to do something I can’t: I ask them. is great for that.

  20. For me, the English breakfasts make something to look forward too

  21. is that an exclusive reveal – it’s Queen this year!!!

  22. V much looking forward to opening keynote from

  23. Great point everyone wants their vid to be popular – give them top recording tips & submissions will improve

  24. as always the networking and the chance to hear what is going on elsewhere.

  25. hopefully to embed inclusive communication practices throughout to ensure better practice is shown

  26. – Video is always driven by sound – it’s the most important part and often overlooked

  27. . No, but then, yes yes it is. Queen is clearly where it’s at

  28. RT : Alrighty, last topic: What are you most looking forward to at this year’s Communication Directors’ Forum?

  29. . maybe in 3 years video will have been replaced by something else – 3 years in Tech seems like a lifetime

  30. we tend to find viewers tolerate UGC as long as sound is good, poor sound and viewiing times decay

  31. Alrighty, last topic: What are you most looking forward to at this year’s Communication Directors’ Forum?

  32. leaders should be braver re. No scripts MT“: Video can be effective in IC also non-scripted leader videos”

  33. The future of video is in the metadata behind the videos – Speach search will change video forever – in 3yrs

  34. Agree 30sec is usually optimum also video metrics can usually tell you where ppl have stopped watching-very useful

  35. T3 – I have given the social voice of my business over to my staff – and empower them to speak thier minds and share ideas

  36. It’s important to catalogue videos effectively as they can easily get lost in a digital heap of noise

  37. Keep video less than 30 secs and KISS (keep it simple stupid). Video allows you be more personable and human. Great opportunities

  38. *Social* is also changing the role of , which is now co-created & much more conversational.

  39. It is your personality that gives personality to your brand; if you’re social, your brand will be social too!

  40. – Keep it Beautiful, Simple & useful – to many people forget to make their videos work for them

  41. keep them short, focused, try a “core message trailer” then allow viewer to go deeper to get a broader story, by clicking again

  42. The problem is, some people think that they think but they don’t think & this causes social media crisis for them.

  43. Video can be really effective in internal campaigns & especially with User Generated Content also non-scripted leader videos

  44. Absolutely Ehsan. It’s the *social* of social technologies that allows the magic to happen. The technology is the enabler

  45. Agree on that – social has to be two way – thats what makes it social

  46. the beauty is that my internal audience help me create what they need hence 45% log in daily

  47. tech is important but not everything. Most importantly, people create authenticity not tech!

  48. Topic 4: How can internal communications professionals use video effectively?

  49. Agree – tho some ppl think a push newsletter is social, I don’t believe it is as it’s not giving employees a voice

  50. – thats good for the user but not for the platforms – Twitter want you to know it’s twitter – same with google+

  51. Social technology gives the opportunity for timely and authentic . A chance to listen to everyone’s voice.

  52. social must be in the DNA & culture of a biz; SM channels are just the means for communicating that culture.

  53. I think sports are a great place to see this happening – very specialised and enthusiastic user base

  54. I see a future in customized social platforms that house all the networks but filter according to what you want.

  55. Social also enables better metrics and employee feedback on what’s working & not with IC channels, approach etc

  56. T3: Just come off Skyping in Austin, Texas who do just that: great success with a Cheerleaders Assoc!

  57. How many Social Networks do we all use on a daily basis – I just counted 5 – and we don’t have a company version – madness

  58. The best example for future of social media is and of course personal blogs!

  59. Social should enable employees to deliver the comms in an authentic way, peer-to-peer comms rather than push from IC

  60. RT : intranets modeled after external communication frameworks. Look internally to guess at what will…
