This week's chat

October 12, 2019 #CommsChat on differentiation as an environmental charity

Global warming is a hot issue, literally and figuratively. The climate crisis is taking centre stage thanks in no small part to campaigners like Greta Thunberg capturing the attention of world leaders and global media alike. Extinction Rebellion (XR) is taking a more aggressive stance. Is it shaping the future of environmental comms or shouting so loudly that others can’t make their voices heard? We will be joined by XR representative William Skeaping (@skeapspeaks) to discuss topics including:

  1. With Extinction Rebellion hijacking the news agenda, what’s the danger that more moderate campaigners for important causes are being drowned out?
  2. How do other causes compete successfully for attention?
  3. What’s the danger that shock tactics turn off as many people as they motivate to support the cause?
  4. How do you guard against direct action or shock tactics becoming the norm?
  5. How far is too far?
  6. Has Extinction Rebellion become the Brewdog of environmental issues and, if so, like Brewdog will it eventually abandon publicity stunts in favour of a more conventional approach?

Join us! We tweet from @CommsChat and #CommsChat takes place every Monday, from 8-9pm GMT. Anyone can take part in the discussion – simply follow the hashtag here or on Twitter. If you can’t make the chat or would like to revisit it, a transcript will be posted to Commschat.com on Tuesday morning. We’d love to hear your suggestions for future topics – please get in touch with Brittany via Twitter or email or contact us on Twitter with your ideas.
