This week's chat

October 27, 2019 #CommsChat on a huge week for public affairs

Last week was a hell of a week for public affairs – literally and figuratively. For those of us in the communications business, the Ruth Davidson story has been impossible to ignore as the MSP has been subject to a slew of criticism from trade bodies and national newspapers alike. At the same time, research commissioned by Women in Public Affairs and released last week painted a dismal picture for female lobbyists. This week’s CommsChat will explore both those issues and, we hope, spark lively debate. Our special guests will be Tulchan Communications founder Andrew Grant (@awefgrant), James Crouch (@MrJCrouch), partner at Opinium, and Andė Milinytė (@AndeMilinyte), senior research executive at Opinium, which produced the research for Women in Public Affairs. See you at 8pm.

  • Ruth Davidson’s appointment as a consultant to Tulchan has been condemned in the press and by the PRCA, but why shouldn’t comms professionals have access to the most knowledgeable, experienced advisors?
  • If Ms Davidson is not engaged in lobbying, what ethical dilemmas does her appointment throw up?
  • What advice would you offer Ms Davidson in light of negative coverage?
  • How might her appointment help other women in public affairs to break through the macho, laddish culture highlighted in the recent Women in Public Affairs research?
  • How best can the results of that research be used to improve public affairs for all?

Join us! We tweet from @CommsChat and #CommsChat takes place every Monday, from 8-9pm GMT. Anyone can take part in the discussion – simply follow the hashtag here or on Twitter. If you can’t make the chat or would like to revisit it, a transcript will be posted to Commschat.com on Tuesday morning. We’d love to hear your suggestions for future topics – please get in touch with Ruth via email or contact us on Twitter with your ideas.
