This week's chat

February 17, 2015 Transcript of #CommsChat on internal communications and corporate video

This week we spoke about the pros and cons of using video as a tool for internal communications. We were joined by guest @richard_baker from @CarlsbergUKCorp.

Here are some of the insights:

  •  as a society we’ve grown & now full appreciate / realise that video content is the most digestible form of content
  •  Video connects employees, makes communication more personal, especially for remote or geographically spread workforces
  •  Hi all! A2) I think that the good news should always be shared by video internally and the bad news in a proper meeting!
  •  Video can be a good medium but it still needs the creative process to add engagement factor to get people interested
  •  With multinational org’s, bad news cant be delivered face to face in 20 countries simultaneously by CEO. Video next best option
  •  17h17 hours ago Comms professionals must guide organisational use of video so it communicates rather than becoming a corporate ad

  1. What do you mean by professionalize?

  2. I’ve also seen some amazing videos with high production videos over the last week!

  3. No. The Ad and Marketing industries and professional video production companies can first!

  4. I love video as a medium to share key messages – they key for me is this being produced in a timely and engaging manner

  5. but internally, a video from a CEO will get shared because people think they should.

  6. Exactly. Our employees are consumers. They have high expectations and our video needs to meet those

  7. We’ve seen some great examples of used to great IC video. Ask

  8. What about video to show how you are dealing with the bad news? Good way to tell employees that you are addressing situation?

  9. me too!

  10. yes, I agree. Video producers need to move away from the talking heads only format!

  11. Good point from . We’ve had success with podcasts as people listen whilst working on other bits (not ‘just staring’)

  12. (doesn’t mean you don’t need to have some worth talking about though)

  13. This is one everyone will have an opinion on I think! T3: Can internal comms help to professionalise corporate video?

  14. A clear measure of what? That they clicked share not that they watched it and took in the message

  15. we agree Dana!

  16. I am a big fan of user-generated, low production video. Aren’t employees skeptical of highly polished, slick productions?

  17. I think it can be a great tool to be open and transparent with employees!

  18. Video can be a good medium but it still needs the creative process to add engagement factor to get people interested

  19. Indeed it’s been in use for many years, we’ve been making it. And the good news is that high quality content is king!

  20. Until then, employees will say they don’t have time! Talking about home doesn’t work if we treat employees like children at work

  21. All depends on exec & content. Some content, no matter the presenter shouldn’t be presented in video. Evaluate 1st!

  22. . I’m on the fence.Want to say YES be brave! But then I think abt getting diff. news via video if I were employee…

  23. We’ve seen people bang the drum for the last few years, but only now do I believe it’s coming to fruition.

  24. RT : surely it helps companies add shade and context to bad news. So not instead of but as well as

  25. But video for internal and external comms has been important and in regular use for several years now

  26. My problem video is that I don’t think it will work, until productivity is measured in a better format than how busy you look

  27. I think that bad news need to be shared face to face a video here might become a Comms barrier instead!

  28. surely it helps companies add shade and context to bad news. So not instead of but as well as.

  29. I’m sure we said that last year Tom 😉 and I’m sure it will continue to grow

  30. We strongly believe 2015 will be the year for video content to play an increasingly important role in internal & external comms.

  31. A2) So – with all of us used to video – is there more we can share via video – including the bad news? Should we be braver?

  32. Hi all! A2) I think that the good news should always be shared by video internally and the bad news in a proper meeting!

  33. Video for used to be a huge production (pun intended). Now with all this tech, communicators still make excuses.

  34. or buy the kit! 😉

  35. We need to make sure they can view it easily – part of our role to facilitate that

  36. RT : T2: Are there any internal messages that aren’t suited to video communication? Interesting one this..

  37. Video allows u to tell a ‘proper’ story – w/beginning, middle & end. It allows for artistry & richness – even user-generated

  38. T2: Are there any internal messages that aren’t suited to video communication?

  39. Challenge with video is sometimes technology to play content & access issues amongst front line staff v cost to produce

  40. ha! Practice, practice, practice – like! 😀

  41. Or me…that’s why I write, because I sound ‘like’ 1,000 times worse on video!

  42. We all consume TV and video every day in our personal lives. If we don’t use it we perpetuate a second class approach to IC

  43. so is video driving adoption of BYOD in organisations? Any examples?

  44. Does it really allow execs to get their personality across? I’ve seen stilted exec videos with no personality

  45. Exactly! A senior guy who is awkward in front of camera will look worse!

  46. I would disagree. You can’t search a video for a term. I can scan an article much quicker.

  47. but only if they can view it easily..

  48. plus easy to watch & digest via mobile device than reading lengthly articles on the move

  49. It is effective when it is used as a training tool. Those are the most successful videos.

  50. depends on the senior exec! 😉

  51. . at least for the people watching in (not so much for the people making it!)

  52. But – we are all short on time and long on lists of things to do – and video can be extremely time-effective!

  53. Video connects employees, makes communication more personal, especially for remote or geographically spread workforces.

  54. because video allows senior execs to get their personality across far better than a piece of text ever can.

  55. seen the topic for tonight’s ? Might be one for you (if you happen to be free for the next 50 mins)

  56. I’m not sure it makes it easier – it makes it a more ‘normal’ way of consuming content.

  57. . Does that make it easier for employees to create video? Do they engage more bc of that?

  58. . Good question! Anyone have an answer?

  59. . Yes, video’s become ‘normal’ to watch (even make) thanks to smartphones – people almost expect it alongside news

  60. as a society we’ve grown & now full appreciate / realise that video content is the most digestible form of content

  61. is it effective? Sometimes people use it because they think they should. How do people measure success?

  62. They included: allowing CEOs to share personality, communicating complex msgs, reaching disparate workforces, livening up mtgs

  63. When I wrote this last month: I heard TONS of different ideas for use of video in IC

  64. it’s amazing how popular video has become everywhere – and perhaps this is why it’s more so inside orgs

  65. good evening Brittany!

  66. Is getting involved with tonight? Talking video in IC!

  67. First topic: Why is video an effective tool for communicating with employees?
