March 13, 2014 Transcript of #CommsChat on connected cars

Last week, on #CommsChat, we were joined by @jonsilk from @biteglobal who discussed the future of connected cars and mobile tech comms.

Some interesting tweets:

  • @jonsilk  Chief Tech Strategist, Kia: “Connectivity is something everyone expects… it should be seamless between your office, home and car”
  • @NafisaNathani  Volkswagen CEO called on carmakers ensure connected cars do not become “data monsters”-how can connectivity be abused by brands?
  • ‏@jonsilk  I actually think the new car buyer has driven the need for connectivity. Just look at @teslamotors. It’s a different proposition.
  • @PeterMBarrett  I fear Siri would cause mass road rage as drivers howl with anger after Siri’s repeated misunderstandings. #bitmoreworkneeded
  • @jonsilk  VP of Connected Drive from BMW: “The intention of BMW is to have all cars connected.” That’s a strong message.

  9. I am a techy, but I’d actually take things woth a pinch of salt. After all, Volvo needs this as a company.

  10. OK – this is pretty mind-blowing. Connect your car with a dongle.

  11. RT : I think CarPlay is just a fancy interface. The real change is when the SIM is inside the car.

  14. T5: How will Apple’s commitment to connected cars change the market?

  15. Well that is one step ahead of the game! RT : You can do that now if you’ve got a

  16. Interesting that nobody has talked about automation – how will services like iBeacons work with your car?

  17. we can record frm the app wherever you are. Surely we’re not too far from turning the heating off?

  18. : re: connected car and connected home” ”. Think connected is the it won’t matter if your home, travelling or at work 🙂

  19. I think it’s about learning how to use resources well. Sorry for my lateness!

  20. How far are we from being able to turn your home heating on from the car 30 miles away?

  21. Talking of , did I mention I was proper jealous of getting to try one out?

  22. : I think connectivity will be in the top 3 messages, along with eco credentials and performance.

  •

RT : Thanks to connected cars, automotive comms has entered the internet age… Discuss!

  •

T3: Comms pros will, as ever, need to (re)design content to fit the audience in its environment. Bigger role for audio?

  •

Thanks to connected cars, automotive comms has entered the internet age… Discuss!

  •

Great! RT : Interviews with Cadillac and Nissan from ’s report are here:

  •

Exactly. I think the uses are bigger for the manufacturers / society too. It’s about big data.

  •

T3: What will increased connectivity mean for corporate communicators?

  •

Interviews with Cadillac and Nissan from ’s report are here:

  •

…. Inbuilt would be very useful the day I’ve had 😉

  •

Cars talking directly to garages. Car could order the new fan belt it knows it needs? Owner gets a text. Drive to garage. Fitted.

  •

I think that’s scratching the surface… The data coming back from cars could fundamentally change the way they’re built

  •

RT : Killer? No. Relatively easily understood by the mass market? Yes.

  •

I think you just summed up the secret of a killer app…

  •

So much scope to use connectivity to create cars more like eg. office printers (ie. auto-order new toner when running low etc).

  •

Does your car know where you are even when you’re lost? Does your car play music from your iPhone?

  •

It’s also interesting to note that Apple’s first CarPlay deals are with music streaming apps – is music the killer app?

  •

Don’t forget car connectivity isn’t just about a fancier satnav – it allows easier maintenance and fleet management too.

  •

Perfect example of enhanced connectivity. RT : Ford’s Spotify agreement in the US springs to mind.

  •

: T2: What have manufacturers done to enhance connectivity? ” … Don’t Toyota gave a Icarus with in built Google ?

  •

I actually think the new car buyer has driven the need for connectivity. Just look at . It’s a different proposition.

  •

Yes very true. Partly because there’s so much as-yet unlocked growth potential.

Surprising to think that, SatNav apart, such little development in automobile phone tech since handless carphones in mid 80s

  •

RT : "Commonly used smartphone features will be expected in the vehicle" – Matt Jones, Land Rover

  •

And me! RT : I think it’s inevitable & exciting my phone is now my satnav and music player through the car

  •

There’s also a significant difference between built-in SIMs and something like Apple’s CarPlay, which needs a phone connected…

  •

Volkswagen CEO called on carmakers ensure connected cars do not become "data monsters"-how can connectivity be abused by brands?

  •

Evening Tim! What do you think of the importance of connectivity in auto manufacturing?

  •

…Each manufacturer is putting connectivity at the heart of their biz strategy. But how do people think their comms will change?

  •

I read earlier about Vodafone’s new 4G link up deal with Audi & VW…

  •

Lets kick off with T1: Why is connectivity important in auto manufacturing?

  •

We worked with on their 2013 Connected Car Industry Report, which was amazing.

  •

The connected car is a hot topic – and a great opp for automotive OEMs to say new things. It’s up there with wearable computing.

  •

Looking forward to the conference tomorrow with lots of great

  •

So , tell us more about connected cars. Before we kick off with the questions

  •
