This week's chat

July 10, 2017 #CommsChat on private vs. professional life

This week on #CommsChat, we’re talking about private vs. professional life, and how and where the two meet. In an era of digital and on-demand communication, it’s sometimes difficult to maintain a distance between ‘work’ and ‘outside of work’ life – what can be done to help the two exist separately? We’ll also look at the potential implications of workplace relationships, whether romantic or friendly, and talk about the positive influences work/home can be for each other.

The topics are:

  • Is there a merging of professional and private lives in the comms industry? What are the implications of that?
  • What should always be kept private? What should always be kept professional?
  • Does IC & comms have more potential for personal/professional crossover than other professions? Why/why not?
  • Has social media led to difficulty in maintaining a professional distance between colleagues and clients?
  • Can workplace relationships (friend/romantic) compromise professionality?

Join us! We tweet from @CommsChat and #CommsChat takes place every Monday, from 8-9pm GMT. Anyone can take part in the discussion – simply follow the hashtag here or on Twitter. If you can’t make the chat or would like to revisit it, a transcript will be posted to Storify on Tuesday morning. We’d love to hear your suggestions for future topics – please get in touch with Amy at amy.sandys@communicatemagazine.co.uk or contact us on Twitter with any ideas.
