June 29, 2018 #CommsChat on journalism and communications
This week on #CommsChat we’re joined by Jax Jacobsen, journalist and senior communications officer at International Council of Mining & Metals, to talk about the intersection between journalism and communications. We’ll look at what journalist skills can bring to communications, what communication can offer writers and journalist, and how other industries can learn from both professions.
The topics are:
-
- What are journalists’ most marketable skills in other fields?
- What are the fundamental differences between comms and journalism? How are they similar?
- How can comms teams better use former journos in their departments?
- What other professions bode well for a comms career? What can they bring to the table?
- What are the warning signs of a confused/ineffective comms department?
- What are the biggest comms challenges for newcomers to the comms field? How can comms colleagues help overcome them?
Join us! We tweet from @CommsChat and #CommsChat takes place every Monday, from 8-9pm GMT. Anyone can take part in the discussion – simply follow the hashtag here or on Twitter. If you can’t make the chat or would like to revisit it, a transcript will be posted to Storify on Tuesday morning. We’d love to hear your suggestions for future topics – please get in touch with Amy at amy.sandys@communicatemagazine.co.uk or contact us on Twitter with any ideas.
