This week's chat

February 14, 2014 #CommsChat on fiction, fantasy and reality

From The West Wing’s Toby and Sam to Babylon’s Liz Garvey and beyond, communicators have long been portrayed in television, film and other works of fiction. On Monday’s #CommsChat, we’ll be joined by Amanda Coleman (@AmandaComms) from Greater Manchester Police who will help us break down the character of communicators in Babylon, The Bill and others. She’ll make some sense of the reality of police force comms and how it relates to fantastical fictions.

Topics include:

  • Who are your favourite PR & comms people on TV, films and in books?
  • How far removed from reality are fictionalised communicators?
  • What are the challenges in portraying PR & comms in fiction?
  • Are fictionalised comms and PR pros good or bad for the reputation of the profession?
  • Will the fictional portrayal of comms change or become more cliche as the profession changes?

Join us! We tweet from @CommsChat and #CommsChat takes place from 8-9pm UK time – for worldwide times, go here. Anyone can take part in the discussion – simply follow the hashtag here or on Twitter. If you can’t make the chat or would like to revisit it, a transcript will go up on Tuesday morning.

We’d love to hear your suggestions for future topics for #CommsChat – get in touch with Brittany by email or Twitter if you’ve got ideas.
