This week's chat

October 13, 2017 Comms, PR and marketing – what’s the difference?

On Monday’s #CommsChat we welcome Joel Sampson, sales manager at WeAreResource and part of the team behind successful communications initiative @CommsHero, to talk about the difference – or lack thereof – between communications, PR and marketing. We’ll look at the function of each profession, how communications works in-house or agency side, and what the time scale should be for those working in each profession. Follow @CommsChat on Twitter and use the hashtag #CommsChat to get involved.

The topics are:

  • Is there a difference between comms, marketing and PR? What?
  • Is it better to outsource comms to an agency, or keep the function in-house? Why?
  • Should comms, marketing and PR be exclusive to those departments? Or does everyone in an organisation have a role to play?
  • Is comms, marketing and PR Monday to Friday, 9am-5pm? Should it be?
  • What are the benefits of professional qualifications in comms, marketing and PR jobs?

Join us! We tweet from @CommsChat and #CommsChat takes place every Monday, from 8-9pm GMT. Anyone can take part in the discussion – simply follow the hashtag here or on Twitter. If you can’t make the chat or would like to revisit it, a transcript will be posted to Storify on Tuesday morning. We’d love to hear your suggestions for future topics – please get in touch with Amy at amy.sandys@communicatemagazine.co.uk or contact us on Twitter with any ideas.
