Transcript of #CommsChat on the rise of tablets

This week's chat

Last night on #CommsChat, we discussed everything about tablets from iPads to apps. We looked at the relevance of desktop computers in an increasingly mobile world and the effectiveness of advertising on mobile devices.

Here are some highlights from last night:

@dizzernp Thing to remember about tonight’s #commschat is that the tablet has been a favoured means of communicating key messages since Moses!

@nlakeland Competition will drive innovation & improve user-experience. Just look at what Google have developed in their latest #Nexus range

@5rule5 Tablets are great but they are consumption devices primarily. If you are creating anything then they wouldn’t be first choice

@Midinotes Windows 8 will be exciting for the tablet AND laptop world! Needs more apps and time to mature

@Engagingbrand Lol….we once moved from walking on all fours, now we need minty thin fingers to survive in digital jungle

@Midinotes Understandable as people more engrossed in tablets and able to devote time to clicking adverts.. Mobile users haven’t time

#CommsChat tonight: Rise of the tablets

This week's chat

Tonight on #CommsChat, we’re going to be discussing the new wave of tablet computers and what they mean for professional communicators.

Is pen and paper now completely obsolete? Are tablets replacing laptops? Is hybrid computing the way forward? Tablets may have seemed like the stuff of sci-fi for many years – but Apple has now sold 100 million iPads, and there are equivalent devices, both maxi and mini, carving out footholds in the market.

Topics up for discussion tonight will include:

  • What does increased competition in the tablet industry mean for app producers, designers, social experts and others?
  • Has the market reached saturation point?
  • How are tablets superior to laptops and desktops for comms professionals?
  • Does tethered computing have a future?
  • Surveys have shown that click-through rates on tablet advertising is significantly higher than on mobile. Is this still a valid way of measuring engagement?

#CommsChat takes place from 8-9pm (UK time) every Monday evening (with the odd exception).

Anyone can take part in the discussion – simply follow the hashtag here or on Twitter. If you can’t make the chat or would like to revisit it, a transcript will go up on Tuesday morning.

We’d love to hear your suggestions for future topics for #CommsChat – get in touch with Molly by email or Twitter if you’ve got ideas.

Transcript of #CommsChat with Digital Impact Award winners

This week's chat

On 22 October, there was a double helping of #CommsChat. We held a special lunchtime chat with CIPR presidential candidates @MitiAmpoma and @LionelZetter. Then, at the normal 8 p.m. GMT time slot, #CommsChat featured some of the winners of the Digital Impact Awards. The guests and participants chatted about the relevance of awards in the communications industry, the benefits and pitfalls of digital integration and the relevance of social media agencies in the future.

Some tweets that caught our eye are below:

@Chelle_PR Digital is just one option, not always the right one. It wholly depends on your target audience & what you are trying to achieve

@adamrubins digital is a PLATFORM for comms. Not necessarily the most important but the quickest, most targeted and cost effective

@steve_murg Digital, the digital audience is much more unforgiving and critical…got to be interesting, not just there

@Maxim_PR Often get asked ‘but have you increased sales using digital?’. That’s not the main reason we use it though

@AllThingsIC ‘what if’ scenario is even more important when it comes to crisis as reaction speed needs to be cranked up

@dirktherabbit my take: awards = a 3rd party has judged your work to be a) effective b) creative

#CommsChat on 22 October: Excellence in digital comms

This week's chat

Tonight on #CommsChat, we’ll be running a slightly more low-key chat than this lunchtime’s conversation. In the wake of the Digital Impact Awards, we’re taking excellence in digital communications, and more broadly awards in the comms industry, as our topic.

We don’t have a specific “guest Twitterer” tonight, but are looking forward to hearing from some owners of the coveted Digital Impact Awards trophies. As ever, everyone is encouraged to join in and engage in the conversation.

Topics for this evening:

  • Is digital now the most important channel for communication?
  • How important is it to identify your audience before embarking on a digital strategy?
  • What’s the best way of measuring digital ROI?
  • Are industry accolades such as awards useful?
  • Is there still room for the social media agency?

#CommsChat takes place from 8-9pm (UK time) every Monday evening (with the odd exception).

Anyone can take part in the discussion – simply follow the hashtag here or on Twitter. If you can’t make the chat or would like to revisit it, a transcript will go up on Tuesday morning.

Transcript of #CommsChat with CIPR presidential candidates

This week's chat

Today at 1 p.m. we had a special lunchtime edition of #CommsChat in which the two candidates for the CIPR presidency, Miti Ampoma and Lionel Zetter, fielded questions. Both candidates provided interesting views on recent issues facing the PR industry and what they see as the role of CIPR in the future.

Voting closes on 24 October so the debate was the final opportunity for the candidates to answer questions from CIPR members and others.

Some tweets that stood out during the hour were:

lionelzetter The CIPR has always led on professionalisation and on upholding standards, and it must continue to do so

stuartbruce Are larger & more professional contradictions? More professional is higher barrier to entry (good thing), but does it slow growth

MitiAmpoma @CommsChat Yes I do. Lessons of Arab Spring with limited access to internet is truly stuff of revolution as an example.

hanifleylabi Regulation that comes about from a process of two way, open and accessible dialogue can only strengthen the profession

lionelzetter CIPR President should lead, promote the industry, exercise good judgment, communicate clearly, and avoid cliches and jargon

MitiAmpoma @CommsChat Lead from the front, martial our best thinkers, challenge the status quo, give voice & credibility to membership & DO.
